Multiple On Invested Capital (MOIC) Calculator
MOIC measures the total value returned relative to the initial investment. It is calculated as total cash inflows divided by the initial investment. More info →
Input
Enter investment values to calculate MOIC.
How This Calculator Works
MOIC (Multiple on Invested Capital) shows how many times your money came back. It simply divides everything you received by what you put in. It does not consider how long it took, so use it together with IRR when timing matters.
The Formula
MOIC = Total Cash Inflows ÷ Total Invested
Total Invested = Cash Outflow + any negative cash flows ยท Total Return (%) = (Total Cash Inflows − Total Invested) ÷ Total Invested × 100
What Each Input Does
- Cash Outflow
- The total amount you invested.
- Cash Inflow Type
-
Variable โ enter what you received each year. A negative amount means you invested more that year, so it is added to the total invested.
Fixed โ the same amount every year; it is multiplied by the number of years.
Step by Step
- All positive cash flows are added together; any negative ones are added to the cash outflow to give the total invested.
- Total inflows are divided by the total invested to give the MOIC, shown as a multiple like 2.50x.
- The total return is the profit as a percentage of the total invested.
Reading the Result
3.00x or more โ excellent; 2.00xโ2.99x โ strong; above 1.00x โ a profit.
1.00x โ you got back exactly what you invested.
Below 1.00x โ you got back less than you invested.
Quick Example
Cash outflow 100,000, fixed inflow of 50,000 for 5 years.
Total inflows are 250,000, so MOIC = 250,000 ÷ 100,000 = 2.50x and the total return
is 150.00%, a strong result.
